For those taking CS401/501 for credit...

For each talk you need to write a report and submit the pdf as you homework. Reports are graded on a 10 point scale. If you miss 25 or more points you will fail. For example: if you turned in all your reports but 3 you will be missing 30 points and fail. If miss 5 points on 5 reports you will fail. The reports are easy (see below). Just don't be brief or sloppy. Follow instructions. Enjoy the talks.

Please write the following for each talk in this order:

  1. Your name
  2. Title of talk
  3. Name of presenter
  4. Date of presentation
  5. Summary of talk in a paragraph of not fewer than 300 or more than 500 words. Be complete and concise. Use 12 point, single spaced, pdf document with a nice simple serif font like New Times Roman, Bookman, Times, Palatino, ... for readability, thanks. Address these points:
    1. What is the problem being solved or key question be asked or the skill being taught?
    2. What are the key background points?
    3. What is proposed solution or what is investigated or what are key skills?
    4. How was it investigated or what work was done or skills practiced in class (for non research talks this might not apply)
    5. What is the conclusion? What did you think of the talk?
  6. Select an aspect of the speaker's topic and discuss its IMPACT on individuals, organizations, and societies. For example: algorithms or techniques presented; companies, products or data produced; ideas or theory discussed (at least 100 words).
  7. Professional development and life-long learning are important in any career. What can you learn from the career or job experience of speaker? OR What new skills did the speaker have to learn to achieve what you saw today? These may be technical, personal, business, or other skills. (at least 100 words)
  8. Any advice for the presenter? (outside of word limit)
  9. Did you enjoy the talk and want them to return for the next seminar group? (outside of word limit)
Submit this report as a pdf file. Be sure your name is in the pdf file. The report is due Wednesday at 5pm PT.
