Cool Rides in Idaho/Washington

* The Route of the Hiawatha [a second site here] This follows the old railroad tracks used by the famed Olympian Hiawatha train. It goes through 8 tunnels including the amazing 8771ft Taft tunnel. Imagine riding for 10 minutes through a pitch black tunnel. ... And over 7 high trestles (some over 200 feet high). Total distance: 12.7 miles, Elev gain 1000 feet. Bus service runs from top to bottom and back shuttling bikers. A unique experience. Take BRIGHT lights! I used a pair of hallogen bike lights. (How to get there: Map to Hiawatha Trail Marilyn and I crossing a trestle on the Hiawatha

* Trail of the Coeur d' Alene A 72 mile bike trail from Plummer to Wallace, Idaho. Follows an old railroad line, which follows an old Native American trail.

* The Lewiston Grade: Beautiful ride up from about 800 ft elevation to around 2000 ft. The road is 8 miles long with a nice smooth surface. Watch for some gravel on the road. Wind can be a problem. Park at the T at the bottom to avoid the heavily traveled road along the river. A great ride either direction. Connie and I on the lower part of the grade

* Wawawai: A road in need of a little repair that twists down to the part at Wawawai where water is available in the Summer. A 25 mile one-way trip out of Pullman to the edge of the Palouse and down to the river. Great ride. No services other than at the park. (Note, the ride form Wawawai Park to Lewiston is incredibly monontonous and strong winds can go through the canyon. I would to Wawawai to Lewiston rather than the reverse because of winds. That is a dang lonely road with not much to look at.

* Winchester Grade: A great secret. This is like the Lewiston grade only more remote. The feeling of sudden plummet to the river is missing but the ride is beautiful. I hear the pie at the cafe in Winchester is good. Start in the town of Culdesac cross the highway going West a little south of the grain elevators and start the climb. About 17 miles one way if you go all the way to Winchester.

Robert's Rules of the Road

* be predicatable
* ride on the right, pass on the left
* signal everything
* wear bright clothes
* make eye contact with drivers
* wear a helmet
* assume you are not seen
* always call your passes
* don't let other riders you are riding with make safety decisions for you. Make sure your actions are your own
* use front AND rear lights at night
* use body language and bike position on the road to clearly show your intent

Todd Mellinger's Rules of Bike Safety

  1. Always ride defensivly.
  2. If you get hit it doesn't matter who was right or wrong. You will lose.
  3. Never trust the judgment of other riders. Always make your own decisions on what is safe or un-safe. When someone yells "clear" - look anyway!
  4. Even with #3 if you are "leading" a pack, think about the people behind you in case they do delegate their safety.
  5. Never, never, trust a driver. Don't trust them to stop at a light, or anything else. Use the rule "Get eye contact" before you even begin to believe they see you.
